First opened for business in 1997, the course at Steelwood Country Club is a Jerry Pate design that’s routed in such a way that it brings Lake Steelwood and its related wetland areas into contact with six of the holes.
In The American Golf Resort Guide, author Daniel Wexler has this to say about the layout: “beginning along the lakeside, then moving inland for 14 holes, it offers notable early tests like the 414-yard 1st (curving left along the shore) and the 355-yard 3rd (nearly driveable across three left-side bunkers) before kicking into gear at wetlands-orientated holes.
Play returns to the water at the 359-yard 16th, an adventurous dogleg left which might potentially be driven via a long, diagonal wetlands crossing. With the lake then figuring prominently (though not truly invasively) at the 211-yard 17th and 535-yard 18th, Steelwood packs enough challenge and strategic value to safely rate among the state’s top courses.”
