Pambula Merimbula Golf Club was established on 9th September 1965, dissolving the club named Pambula-Merimbula Country Golf Club which had been formed five weeks earlier. A lease for 52 acres from the Crown Lands Department then allowed the newly formed club to build an initial 9-hole course and the first mixed foursomes event took place on 18th May 1966.

John Watson and Associates was engaged to design an 18-hole course in two stages and the first nine holes with grass greens opened for play in October 1974. A second nine was added in May 1979, along with an upgrade of the existing sand greens. A decade later Greg Smith, the superintendent at the time, designed and built a third nine.

The new holes, as assigned today, were 6, 13-15, 19, 21-23 and 27. The three eighteen hole layouts that can now be played are the Pambula course (1-18), Merimbula course (10-27) and Sapphire course (1-9, 19-27). The 18-hole layout considered as the “championship course” is the Merimbula.

At the start of the new millennium, 125 acres of land adjacent to the property were purchased at a cost of $187,000 for potential further expansion of the 27-hole complex. Nowadays, more than 50,000 rounds are played every year in this beautiful native bushland location on the Sapphire Coast, with the club enjoying very healthy membership numbers in excess of a thousand.
