The 10-hole course at Kambaku Golf Club sits at the confluence of the Komati and Crocodile Rivers, where architect Douw van der Merwe helped a group of local farmers transform their golfing dream into reality at the start of the new millennium. Local farmers Chris Basson and Harry van Dyk have since shaped the greens to USGA specifications.
The club takes its name from one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ bull elephants that lived in the nearby Kruger National Park from 1930 to 1985, with Kambaku in the local language meaning “bloody big tusker”. The tusks on this magnificent animal are said to have extended to 260 centimetres and each of them weighed a massive 64 kilograms.
The course lies just outside the railway town of Komatipoort, close to the small border town of Ressano Garcia in Mozambique, where holes are lined by bushveld trees and playing surfaces are carpeted in cynodon grass from tee to green. A practice green and Himalayan putting course have recently been installed close to the clubhouse.
Another hole has been added to the original 9-hole course and new tees have recently been installed at the highest point of the property where golfers can see over the forest canopy and the Komati River. From this position, golfers play thrilling tee shots downhill to the short par four 5th and the par three 14th.
